You've done your research, chosen a provider you trust, and booked your appointment. Now what? A lot of patients are surprised to learn that what you do in the days before a Botox or filler treatment can genuinely affect your results, your comfort during the procedure, and how smoothly you heal afterward.
Spring is one of the busiest times of year for injectable treatments in Northern Virginia. Events are picking up, the weather is warming, and patients want to look refreshed before outdoor gatherings, graduations, and travel. If your appointment is coming up soon, this guide is for you.
Why Preparation Actually Matters
Botox and dermal fillers are minimally invasive, but they are still medical procedures. The tissues being treated are sensitive, and certain substances in your system can increase bruising, affect how well the product settles, or lead to more swelling than necessary.
A little preparation goes a long way. The goal is to arrive in good health, with clean skin, and without anything in your system that could complicate the process.
What to Avoid Before Your Appointment
These are the most common things that can increase bruising and swelling. Try to avoid them for at least 48 to 72 hours beforehand, and ideally longer when possible:
- Blood thinners and NSAIDs. Aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and similar medications can increase bruising. If you take these for a medical condition, speak with your prescribing physician before stopping them. Do not stop a prescribed medication without medical guidance.
- Alcohol. Alcohol thins the blood and can increase swelling and bruising. Avoid it for at least 24 to 48 hours before your appointment.
- Fish oil, Vitamin E, and high-dose supplements. These have blood-thinning properties. Common culprits include fish oil, omega-3s, Vitamin E, flaxseed oil, and St. John's Wort.
- Retinol and harsh skin care products. If you use retinol, tretinoin, or exfoliating acids, pause them for a few days before your appointment to reduce skin sensitivity at the injection sites.
- Scheduling too close to a major event. Even with a smooth procedure, bruising and swelling can happen. Most patients look and feel great within a few days, but give yourself at least 10 to 14 days before a wedding, reunion, or important photo opportunity.
What to Do Before Your Appointment
The do's are just as important as the don'ts. These steps help your appointment go smoothly and your results settle well:
- Stay well hydrated. Especially if you're receiving dermal fillers, hydration matters. Hyaluronic acid fillers attract water, and patients who are well-hydrated often find their results look fuller and more natural.
- Eat a light meal beforehand. Coming in on an empty stomach can make you feel lightheaded. Have something to eat a couple of hours before your appointment.
- Arrive with a clean face. Skip the heavy makeup if you can. You'll want clean, accessible skin, and your injector may cleanse the area before treatment anyway.
- Share your full medication and supplement list. Your provider needs the complete picture to make safe recommendations. Don't leave anything out, even supplements that seem minor.
- Ask your questions ahead of time. If you're wondering about specific areas, how much product might be needed, or what results to realistically expect, write your questions down. Your consultation is the right time to cover everything.
- Plan your schedule thoughtfully. Avoid intense exercise, saunas, and facials for 24 hours after treatment. It helps to have a lighter day lined up after your appointment.
What to Expect When You Arrive
At Physician Artistry, Botox and filler appointments begin with a conversation, not just a treatment. Tamar, our registered nurse injector with advanced training from the Allergan Medical Institute, takes time to understand what you want before any product is placed. Dr. Thomas, our medical director, is on-site and involved in the care here, which matters in a way you may not experience at every med spa.
If you're newer to injectables, it may also help to read our post on what to expect during your first Botox appointment before you come in. And if you're curious about how combining treatments can enhance your results, our guide on combining Botox and fillers for a full-face refresh is worth a read.
Feeling prepared makes a real difference. When patients know what to expect and arrive ready, the experience tends to go more smoothly, and the results often reflect that.
